Winter Hair Care: How to Care for Your Hair During the Winter

< All Posts

If you live in an area that experiences harsh winter weather, you know how much the climate can have an effect on your hair. The cold can make your hair feel dry, frizzy, and damaged, and the static can be unbearable.

Your summer hair care routine may not cut it in the wintertime, but that doesn't mean you have to just hunker down and wait for the cold weather to be over. Your hair can still thrive in freezing temperatures as long as you take the time to figure out what works.

Here are three winter hair care tips to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy:

1. Avoid heat and hot water

Nothing feels better in the winter than stepping into a hot shower, but scalding temperatures aren't great for your hair. Excessively hot showers can quickly take all the remaining moisture out of your hair, making it feel even more dry and brittle.

If you can't give up hot showers, try to avoid getting your hair under the hot running water. When it's time to wash your hair, turn the temperature down to lukewarm. Cool water is even better for healthy hair, so try to reduce the temperature as much as you can bear.

Stay away from heat styling, too. Blow drying, straightening, or curling your hair with heat will dry out your hair just like hot water. Instead, allow your hair to air dry, and experiment with new styles that don't require your straightener or curler.

2. Prioritize moisture

There are plenty of ways you can get more moisture in your hair during the cold, dry winter. Once a week, use a hair and scalp oil or leave-in conditioner to help to restore moisture to your hair, repair damage, and reduce static. Oil-based treatments can be particularly effective in the winter as they provide so much moisture and protection for your hair.

You can prevent your hair from drying out by investing in a humidifier. Although there's nothing you can do about the outdoor air, a humidifier can make your home much more comfortable. Not only will this keep your hair hydrated, but it can also help with dry skin, cracked lips, and dry sinuses.

3. Wear hats

Hats should be a wardrobe staple for anyone living in a cold climate. They keep you warm while also protecting your hair from the harsh outdoor air. Whenever you step foot outside, wear a hat to stop your hair from losing all its moisture. Although you may worry about hat hair, it's a much better problem than dry, damaged locks.

Keep in mind, though, that certain materials, including wool and cotton, can damage your hair. Look for hats lined with satin, silk, or other gentle fabrics that will protect your hair from both the cold weather and from the hat itself.

Your hair may be harder to manage in cold weather than in warm weather, but with some time and effort, you can find a successful winter hair care strategy. If you keep your hair moisturized and protected, it will look great and feel healthy.
