Make a Prep List

Layout all items that come in your at-home color kit. Here are a few other items that are already in your home and will make your application easier. Your color application will go a lot smoother when all your tools are at your fingertips. 

• Rattail comb- helps create clean sections to help ensure root coverage is thorough
• Clips- for hair sections
• Old hand towels
• Handheld mirror- to help you see the back of your head
• Shirt- wear something that opens in front or that you will not mind if it gets stained.

Prep Your Hair

You do not want to apply hair color to dirty hair. Product and mineral build-up may create a layer of film around your hair and alter your color results. To avoid this from happening, shampoo with a clarifying shampoo a day or so before you are going to color your hair. Once you are done shampooing, rinse it out. Apply your favorite Better Natured conditioner like mine, Better Natured Color Care Conditioner, making sure to rinse it out completely. Allow your hair to dry naturally and do not use any styling agents.

After Care

Now that your hair is color-treated, you should protect your investment. If you are not already, make sure to switch all your hair care products to color-safe options.
